Malaysia has one of the highest mobile subscribers across the region. In terms of data subscribers, it has been growing steadily over the years.
Mobile Data Subscribers
Until 2015, there were 3 main providers of mobile data subscribers which are:
Maxis Leading in mobile data
Maxis, the leading telecommunication company in Malaysia offers 2 types of mobile data services which are Wireless Broadband and Mobile Internet. The latter holds more almost 7 million subscribers in 2013 and has grown to almost 9 million a year later.
Digi meanwhile has the second highest subscribers with almost 5 million accounts. This grew to about 6.5 million in 2014 and then to more than 7.5 million in 2015. TM’s Unifi is around 600,000 in 2013 and grew to almost 800,000 in 2015.
Mobile Phone subscribers
The telco with the highest subscribers would be Maxis which has more than 12 million accounts on both prepaid and post-paid platforms in 2013. It has been hovering around this figure for the next 2 years. Celcom too has such figures. Digi’s subscriber base has been growing steadily in that 3 years starting from 10 million, 11 million and 12 million respectively. Meanwhile, over 65% of mobile subscribers are attached with the telco on 3G and 4G services.
There are in total 43 million mobile subscriptions in Malaysia is 142% more than the total population. Among those, more than 75% are pre-paid customers. More than half of the subscribers are on mobile messengers while more than 40% of them use their mobile devices to watch streaming videos.
In other areas, almost 40% of mobile subscribers use the devices for mobile banking and map services.
